Carb Crafter: CHLOE WISE
Artist Chloe Wise tasted her first bout of virality back in 2014 when actor Bobbi Salvör Menuez wore her Bagel No.5 sculpture to a Chanel dinner. Frenzied over by fashion elite, the bagel bag oozing with cream cheese was not in fact an exclusive Chanel piece but instead part Wise's series Bread Bags which fashions found designer hardware onto urethane carbs.
The bags were just the beginning. Since then — and despite old school art world scepticism of a young female artist both partaking in and critiquing millennial consumer culture — Chloe has transitioned from viral sensation to art market star, releasing two books of work as well as multiple solo shows. Announced just this week, some of Wise's work will be part of an auction series called "WOMEN: Art in Times of Chaos" on August 25th.
Raised in Montreal though based in NYC since 2013, Chloe is known as somewhat of an "It-Girl" both in the city and online, reguarly attending fashion shows and hosting dinners at her studio, jokingly dubbed Chloho House. Her fluid live-work space in Midtown is where the magic happens, decorating her studio and living space in the Modernist style of her parents and childhood home in Montreal.
Of New York, she explains: "New York pushes you so hard because everyone is from somewhere else and everyone is open-minded to what others are creating, because America, as [French sociologist and cultural theorist] Jean Baudrillard puts it, is a completely amnesiac culture, where no one has a background and individuals can just pop up and exist. There’s a total creative freedom in that."
